The Organisation of American States (OAS) was established in order to achieve among its member states ‘an order of peace and justice, to promote their solidarity, to strengthen their collaboration, and to defend their sovereignty, their territorial integrity, and their independence’. The OAS, through its support of national efforts to control firearms, munitions and explosive material, as well as to dispose of excess, obsolete or expired weapons and material, builds synergy between the humanitarian imperative for projects of this nature and their inherent need for peace, stability, and security.
